Jockey's Ridge State Park 5/28/2011 Part 2

After our visit to the Wright Brothers National Memorial, we drove south about 6 miles into Nags Head, to Jockey's Ridge State Park. We first walked around the Visitors Center, then headed out for the main event. This park is free. Dogs are not allowed in the Visitors Center.

The first park of our trek in on a boardwalk.

At the end of the boardwalk, we get our first glimpse of the 426-acre park of the largest natural living sand dune on the east coast. Dogs are welcomed on the sand dune but are to be leashed and picked up after. We didn't bring Mallery, because we didn't know if dogs were allowed, and this day would have been too much for her.

We head down the hill of sand and then up.

At the top of the hill, there was another hill to climb. This is our fourth visit to large sand dunes. This being the smallest and easiest to walk on. the one in Colorado, being the biggest and hardest to walk on.

At the top, you get a magnificent view of the Atlantic and Nags Head.

Looking a little south.

Close up.

When you turn around you see the Albemarle Sound.

We went down a hill, then back up a hill. (You can see part of a person on the top of the hill).

So we could see some people getting Hand gliding lessons. They have lessons for who ever is willing to try!

Getting ready to

fly! There he goes!

Over on the far hill, there were Hand gliding kites laying on the sand ready for any student flyer's. We wondered how that lonely tree managed to survive, amongst all that sand.

Someone else was practicing their wind surfing skills on sand. We never felt hot, because of the great breeze on the dunes.
