Big Lagoon State Park, Penacola, FL.

                   Thursday 2/13/2014

Our drive from Styx River RV Resort in Robertsdale, AL. was just under a hour drive.

View of entrance into the park. We decided to come here because we had not seen this state park, even though we are so close to it when we are in Gulf Shores, AL.

We had made our reservations online a little more than a month prior. The sites are pretty private, but are sand and grass sites.

A look down the street. This park has 75 sites total in the park. All sites are water and electric only, and are $23.30 a night.

All the sites have a small cloths line. Our site 65 was very private on our door side, but not as private on the other side.

After setting up and lunch, it was time for some exercise and exploring. In the campground there is a boardwalk system that takes you across the salt marshes, and a lake to Big Lagoon.

First we cross a swampy area.

The water is very very green!

Signs tell us this is a great birding area during the spring and the fall.

The boardwalk takes us across Long Pond.

Long Pond

No swimming in these waters!

The boardwalk comes to a  road that leads non-camping visitors to a day use.

There are several pavilions in this picnic area, including the Governor's Pavilion.

Mallery makes Joe stop because mom is getting to far behind with her picture taking.

Mallery tells dad, "Ok, mom is with us, we can go again"!

Another boardwalk takes us to an overlook deck that overlooks Big Lagoon and the island/barrier reef to the gulf.

Off to the east we can see the Lookout Tower .

I zoomed in a little. Can you see it now.

We continued on the boardwalk to a sidewalk to a playground,

more picnic areas,

and the small West Beach area of the Big Lagoon State Park.

The water is brackish, and I wonder if alligators are in these waters also. I think I would rather go to the beach to swim, though there are sharks there!

Looking west on Big Lagoon which is also a Intracoastal Waterway also.

Looking east of Big Lagoon.

We headed back across the boardwalk systems toward our campground across Long Pond.

Looking at the plant life in Long Pond from the boardwalk. It was a beautiful sunny day for the drive to Pensacola and for a walk in the state park with a temperature of around 57 degrees.
I have been trying to put a map on my blog page to show where we were to where we are now. I can't seem to figure out how to get the white information box to be depleted from the map. If anyone knows how to do this, please let me know.
