Luckenback, Texas

While still in Fredericksburg, TX we took a short drive SE.

We were told it was a must to go to Luckenback, TX while in the area. The Thomas Michael Riley Music Festival was going on that weekend.

Believe it or not, entrance was free, at least when we went in around 1PM.

Luckenback was established in 1849 as a Trading Post and consisted of a Dance Hall, Beer Joint, and General Store, on 10 acres surrounded by huge oaks trees and two creeks.

We took a walk around the General Store to see what was up.

We could hear music and found that the Wolf Sisters were playing at that time.

It definitely was a toe stomping good time.

We wandered into the General Store and found a bar in there also.

Outside again we found Tumbleweed (the steer) tied to a post, Joe got into the whole Texas thing, and  thought he would try riding a Texas Long Horn Steer.

Joe started to get into it as Tumbleweed's owner told Joe to raise his arm and smile!

As we wandered around I found this real colorful hen.

There were a lot of motorcyclists at the festival that day.

If you wanted to fit in, you could purchase a cowboy hat.

The Wolf Sisters

The women and men's bathrooms were very quaint.

The Beer Saloon.

It was past lunch time so we went over to the outside restaurant to check out the menu.

We chose the Double Meat Burgers and Curly Fries. I was trying to stay on my Yeast Free diet and was going to ditch the bun, but I didn't have any utensils to eat the rest of it , so I indulged. What an excuse, I know.

After lunch we walked across a swing bridge to take a look at the creek and found this Texas shaped campfire.

Luckenback  became a favorite of Texas entertainers after the late folk humorist Hondo Crouch bought the place in 1970. In 1971 Luckenback hosted the first, ( and 35 thereafter), Hell Hath No Fury Ladies State Chili Championship. In 1973 the hamlet held it's 1st Great World's Fair and later that year Jerry Jeff Walker recorded his "Viva Terlingua" album live in the dance hall. It was Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings who made Luckenback world famous with their song, " Luckenback", which was #1 hit on the Country Charts for 6 weeks.

Luckenback is also famous for it's huge population of 3 people.

I believe this is the only home on the property. There were 6 other performers playing that weekend with Thomas Michael Riley being the main draw. We were told that there is always someone playing at Luckenback every weekend. Luckenback is also host to many annual events.
 We are currently in Glen Rose, Texas which is just SW of Fort Worth, TX. We will be here for 3 weeks before moving on.
