Grand Canyon, AZ

9/12/09

We left the Flagstaff Wal-Mart for the Grand Canyon today. We had 18 R.V.'s scattered around the parking lot last night including one horse R.V. trailer. This top's the number of R.V. for one night at a Wal- Mart to date.Hwy 40 outside of Flagstaff. Awesome lighting strikes ahead. Sorry I could not capture them on my simple point and shoot camera. Hwy 64 to the Grand Canyon. Looks like we are heading down in elevation again. At a lower elevation and in a more desert environment again. Red Butte in the distance. We climb to a higher elevation where trees are again. Set up at Trailer Village Campground for a week. Elk just wander around in the park. The park has mostly gravel interior roads, which Mallery doesn't like. There also burrs around, but at least they are the soft burrs that just get caught in her hair and are a nuisance. I follow these Elk's up the road between the R.V. keeping my distance. There they go between the campers. We walk to the rim and we stand back to view His Majesty with awe! So many people go places Joe and I won't go, unless there is a railing. Pictures just don't show the vastness. There is up to 18 miles between the north and south rim. The switchback mule and hiking trail to the bottom of the canyon. Another view of the trail. look at the steepness of the trail.
There is a very nice trail along the rim that goes for miles. But some of the trail gets very close to the edge. Joe and I hug the inner side of the trail, walking one in front of the other. We just don't do well with heights.Mallery enjoyed the trails also. Dogs are allowed on the trails. Scenic splendor. Spectacular views but can overwhelm your senses at times. The views look like a picture and not even real, because of the magnitude and grandeur of it. Great weather in the 70's Enjoying our time seeing His gift's of grandeur. With the 5 million others that come to see this crown jewel of all national parks every year.
