Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area

3/10/2010

After our month stay in Yuma, AZ., we headed west into California. The day before we left, Joe finally caved in and hooked us up to Direct TV. Because we now have satellite, and Joe always wants to save a dollar, we decided to try boon docking for a few days in the desert. We left on I-8 west.
Right away we pass the Imperial Sand Dunes on I -8.
The dunes are with us for awhile to the north of us. After about 40 miles we turned north on Hwy.111, and then back west on Hwy. 78. Our last 40 miles on Hwy. 78 were on a very winding stretch of road, so we had to take it slow. On this stretch of road we also hit an altitude of -250 ft, if I remember correctly, as we drive just south of the Salton Sea.
Santa Rosa Mtns. ahead., and our next stop for a few days in the desert.
We park on BLM land in the Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area.
No hook ups here. Just park and dry camp for free. It was so windy the first night that Joe didn't even try to hook up our new satellite dish for fear it would get blown over and break. Not very many neighbors, but great views of the mountains, and very peaceful. We even have a sun shield over our picnic table. Not so crude after all.
I had Joe park by another RV, so we would not be all by our selves. All the other RVs were about 1/2 to 1 mile away. We did have one green sage bush of some kind off to our left.
Our view out our dining room window. Lots of greenery?
See that sand on the mountain ahead. That is called Blow Hill. It is a sand dune built against the mountain.
The most popular spot with OHV (Off Highway Vehicles). This is about 1/2 mile from our location in the park.
Our nest's evening shadow.
Joe being Mr. Cravits, even though we have no close neighbors, and Mallery relaxing after the long drive.

Mallery checking out her e-mail!
