We decided to take a day drive, going out toward the east entrance of Yellowstone Park. This is the direction I go to get cell and internet service.
Right after Mary's Bay where I stop to make calls and get on the internet, is Steamboat Point.
There is a steam vent on the side of the hill area next to the road. It smells like rotten eggs. You always know if you are coming near a geyser, steam vent, mud pot, or spring by the smell of rotten eggs.
Looking back at Mary's Bay.
It is a beautiful day, like it has been since we have been here, with highs in the 70's.
Wild flowers abound.
We then started to head for Lake Butte Overlook.
At the top of Lake Butte Overlook.
Looking down at Mary's Bay.
There was a short trail leading up from the overlook parking lot, so I climbed up!
There you can see Joe below at the overlook. Yellowstone Lake stretches for as far as you can see.
This overlook is easy to miss. There is a sign from both directions that says Lake Butte Overlook 1 mile. Which in reality is about .1 mile to the turn. They must be counting it 1 mile after you turn onto the road and drive up to the parking area. Be warned, when you see the sign, you will be turning right or left depending on which direction you are coming from, almost immediately.
At the top of the small hill I climbed, I found these flowers at the base of a tree.
If you are in this area, don't miss the views.
Yellowstone Lake is ice free 5 months of the year.
Someone joins Joe in the views.
You can see the Tetons from here!
You are looking south, across thirty miles of water into an area further from any road than any place in the lower 48 states. Except for Grant Village there is no significant development between here and Jackson, 100 miles south. Grant village is open a few months in the summer.
